Anonymous Personal Story: The Low Fodmap Diet
I am a 24 year old female who was diagnosed with IBS-D a few months ago. I had food sensitivities since age 12 or 13, but my IBS symptoms became severe 2-3 years ago. In order to have a functional life I have to follow a very strict low fodmap diet. I can not consume dairy or gluten. Also, I can feel sick just from eating processed foods.
the hardest part about having IBS (aside from the symptoms) is not having the same social confidence I used to have, and knowing I am unable/ may never be able to do the things I used to do. My energy level is highly effected & I need much more sleep now. I cannot eat at restaurants or drink alcohol. I cannot run or jump because my stomach cramps too much & and I have to stop.
Finally, after 2 years of trying to find a diet that worked for me, I am able to manage having IBS and still be functional. The low fodmap diet works well for me. Also, giving up coffee and carbonated water drinks made a huge positive impact on the way I felt.
I may never be fully better & life may always be tougher for me after the onset of IBS, but I am grateful to have found a diet that works for me. I am also grateful that I am able to work and function.
