What is a thorough colonoscopy?
Colonoscopy is currently the most effective means of detecting colon cancer, but only about one-third of eligible persons elect to have a colonoscopy. With the inconvenience and expense of this procedure, one should expect and receive a thorough examination.
Even among physicians who are board certified and trained in endoscopy, there is an inherent miss rate when performing colonoscopies. This miss rate varies depending on the size of the polyps being examined. Larger polyps are less likely to be missed. For polyps larger than 1 cm (0.4 inches), the miss rate can be as high as 6%, and this rate is even higher for smaller polyps.
