2013 IFFGD Research Award Recipient Muriel Larauche, PhD

Dr. Larauche is Assistant Researcher in the Department of Medicine at UCLA in the Division of Digestive Diseases.

Her research is looking at ways to better understand the differences of the visceral pain response of men and women so as to improve treatment options.

She is also looking at the effects of stress on the functions of the GI tract, through factors that involve the release of chemicals in the body which stimulate biological responses. She studies how these responses may worsen symptoms, as well as how they need to be interrupted to produce symptom relief.

Basic Science is the fundamental approach to understanding how systems work. Basic research takes place in the laboratory and often involves the study of molecules and cells.
