Robin’s Personal Story-Incontinence
I am now a 69 year old male living in a small town in Cumbria. Born in Edinburgh in 1955.
I cannot remember a time when I was not in a nappy and plastic pants. I was born with a genetic malformation of the bladder that as I grew necessitated visits to consultants and hospitals. Around the age of ten I had an explority surgery that revealed a very small bladder and was diagnosed with overflow incontinence. My father’s mother had a similar problem so part of my problem was genetic.
School was nightmarish as my parents fought to get me into a mainline school and children can be cruel but I managed to cope most of the time with regular visits to the nurses room. University was also difficult as I shared a room in the students quarters, but my flat mate was surprisingly understanding but not all of my friends knew or cared about my ‘problem’.
Romance was a difficult area with most of my lady friends dropping me like a hot potato once they knew how I coped with my problem but I eventually found a lady who was not put off and we became a couple. Due to her disabilities and complications in her breathing we only had 10 years together and her death was sudden and devastating. A dear friend at the time came and entered my life revealing that as a child she was a bed wetter and had occasional accidents so we had that in common.
She unfortunately died after nearly 40 years of marriage and this is where I am now.
I am a practicing Christian, and organist in my church, a lay preacher, Bible Study leader, Pastoral Worker and councillor.
This is just a brief synopsis of my life to date, and there could be a lot more to tell but I unfortunately now need to get changed.
Take care all.
