Infant Constipation or Infantile Dyschezia? What Parents Need to Know

One of the most common concerns pediatricians hear during an infant’s first few months of life is, “My baby is constipated.” Parents may notice their baby straining, grunting, turning red, or seeming uncomfortable while passing a bowel movement. Bowel movements may also be unpredictable, with periods of several days between stools.

While these symptoms can be concerning, they are often a normal part of an infant’s development and may be caused by infantile dyschezia. Infantile dyschezia occurs when a healthy baby has difficulty coordinating the muscles needed to have a bowel movement, leading to temporary straining and discomfort. Understanding the difference between true infant constipation and infantile dyschezia can help parents feel more confident about their baby’s bowel habits and know when to contact their pediatrician.
